Innovation doesn’t need to make products that are complex to use, and amongst Contrinex’s infrared light grid’s many advantages is their simplicity to use – The DGI family of light grids ‘detect’ an object as small as 0.9mm, giving an NPN & PNP switched output. A fast response time and infrared sensing provide the DGI & MGI light grids with reliable detection across a wide variety of object shapes and colours, including reflective objects, plus a high degree of immunity to interference from ambient light.


With the DGI and MGI light grids, Contrinex offers compact infrared plug-and-play sensors with a cross-section of only 40 x 20.5mm, that are fast, robust, and simple to implement.


The DGI family of Detection light grids offers detection heights up to 2m, a sensing distance of up to 8m and the capability of detecting objects with diameters as small as 25 mm. Smaller sensing heights are available with a finer resolution, so, for example, a 180mm detection height, is available with a resolution of 0.9mm, or a 500mm detection height, is available with a resolution of 8mm.


If the light grids are mounted horizontally, then of course, these detection heights, become detection widths – The term ‘detection height’ is only used as a term to describe the width of the field of coverage, because these sensors are most commonly used to measure the height of items, typically on a conveyor belt for example.


With response times between 0.8 and 4.8ms depending upon the number of beams (height x resolution), even small objects, moving at high speed can be reliably detected and counted.


Common applications include the production of small parts or foil, injection moulding, packaging equipment and the pharmaceutical industry. 

The MGI family of Detection light grids offers detection heights up to 1.46m, a sensing distance of up to 4m and the capability to detect objects with diameters as small as 12 mm. Smaller sensing heights are available with a finer resolution, so, for example, a 980mm detection height, is available with a resolution of 5mm.


DIP switches enable the installer to define which end to measure from, or to measure the width of an object, or the width of a hole in an object. Measurements are output as analogue values of 0-10V and 4-20mA.



Potential applications for these keen-eyed, robust sensors are logistics or automated packaging systems, and in harsh environments such as warehouses and the wood and extrusion industries
